Launching at SSA

Wow! My goal of trying to finish in the top have of the fleet is not going to well.  I think there are 25 boats racing and our three finishes are two digit and begin with a two.  The Districts are my first time sailing in Annaplis on a Lightning and I was amazed at the conditions:

  • Light air - just over 5mph  - the first race was postponed due to 3 mph winds
  • Wind direction – shifting form 165-180
  • Chop and more chop and waves coming from every direction
  • The sounds of the boat and the wave slapping the boat were horrible

My first question is why would you want to sail here. But I guess it is just another challenge that needs to be met.  I personally think it is going to take me years before I have enough experience sailing in these conditions. We simply do not have these conditions in Havre de Grace.  Flat water and lots of current is what we have in HdG.

Well here are some photos of the day.

 Sunrise over SSA

I had to arrive at SSA a little early because I was concerned about fixing the pole lift on the boat.

 Pole Lift

I would say the pole lift was a little twisted.  I had already removed several of the twists before I decided to document it.  Notice the pile of sand on the asphalt – Yep that is sand from Dewey Beach, Delaware when Pat death rolled at the enterance of the Rehobeth Sailing Club two seasons ago.

Registration Pat trying to pick a number

Registration was well run and Jen laid out the big bucks and joined ILCA as a skipper.  Now she just needs a boat for the Women’s Championship in Newport.  It sure would be great if ILCA would have accepted her all women application for the boat grant program.

Mark boat

The race committee did a nice job with the races today.  I was very imperssed with there signals and communicaitons on channel 68.  This was my first race with a VHF onboard.

Rigging 14366

Jen and John did a nice job with the crew work today – especially in what i consider difficult conditions.

Allen

Wow. Amaizing. Allan finish several hundred yards ahead of everyone again, again and again.
